Utopianism always involves a sense of space, either as reality or as possibility. A somewhere is always predicated for utopia’s nowhere - a country of the mind, born out of creativity and reflection, if not an actual physical place. The nineteen essays in this collection address the dialectics of space and (no-)place within a number of theoretical-methodological frameworks. Topics range from Homer to the present day (indeed, to present-day visions of the future), and issues are covered which relate to several fields of interest, including imaginative literature, ethics, myth, architecture, urban planning, technology, sociology and politics, with a strong theoretical emphasis throughout.
